Buffy Summers is chosen to live the life of a fairy tale princess. She’s cursed by a witch to prick her finger on a spinning wheel, and is whisked away to live in the safe protection of a man who will probably become more of a father to her than anyone would like. Unlike the fairy tale, however, she’s not a baby when this happens. She’s closer to five years old, which is old enough to understand what the curse means.

She stays away from sharp things. Giles keeps her safe and secure, practically wrapped in cotton for most of her child years, and only lets her go outside so far as to play with her dolls on the front porch. He’s protective, and while she doesn’t fully understand what’s going on, she doesn’t mind either. She hasn’t gotten this much attention from an adult since Dawn was born, and she soaks it up like a sponge.

It doesn’t give her much reason to wander far.

It’s one of these days where she sits with her dolls when a group of village boys runs past her porch, brandishing wooden swords and playing a feverish game. She’s a little over seven at the time. They’re laughing and shouting, and the ruckus is enough to draw Buffy’s attention away from her dolls and to the game at hand. The boys are her age, if not a little older, and it’s that fact that has her stumbling down the stairs, watching them closely.

“Can I play?” The three boys all turn to face her with stupefied looks on their faces. She stands there watching them, fingers laced behind her back and eyebrows up inquisitively. “Well?”

“But you’re a girl.”

Damon looked out his window and saw snow.

Whenever Damon sees snow, he regresses to the age of five.

There is a vampire in the garden making snow angels and generally being ridiculous.

To Bonnie's surprise, Mystic Falls had welcomed her with open arms. As soon as she and Stefan arrived, his best friend and former girlfriend Elena pulled her off into a room filled will girls, all getting ready for the night's festivities. Lana and Lois helped her choose a dress, Elena helped with her make-up and each of them took turns with the task of braiding her hair. Dawn seemed especially fascinated with how much of it there was.

Dinner came as soon as she was ready. Stefan escorted her as promised--and she could barely take her eyes off him. All of the food was delicious and after the meal she sampled every dessert she could get her hands on.

As soon as darkness began to settle in, Stefan took her hand and lead her away from the rest of the crowd.

"Where are we going?"

Once upon a time, Dean was a man.

He was a prince, actually. The heir apparent to the tiny kingdom of Lawrence. He was a man with parents, a brother who looked up to him, and the world at his fingertips. He was aware of what was expected of him, but that didn’t stop him from enjoying his life. The food, the luxuries—even the women.

Possibly a bit too much with the women.

It wasn’t that Dean had a reputation, he was simply charming, or at least that was what he liked to believe. Visiting princesses, the ladies of the court—some of them he bedded and some he didn’t, but he always endeared himself to earn their affections, and usually he got what he wanted. And then he met Ruby.

Ruby was elusive. She was mysterious and aloof and with all the charm in his possession, he never seemed to gain any ground with her. Sam teased him about his obsession with this girl, Castiel warned him not to get too close, but Dean didn’t listen. Everything else fell away and all he cared about was having this woman. He thought he had found the one that could actually hold his attention for more than a night. He thought he had found one who could actually challenge him.

Damon knew he was going to both love and hate the Founder's celebration this year.

He'd love it because, hey, big party in honor of his family, and the families of some of his closest friends. Who could ask for anything better?

He'd hate it because he'd have to see Stefan and Elena being the ridiculously cute couple they were.

He loved his brother and wanted all the best for him, but it always seemed to be about him, didn't it? He was the favored son, the one who did everything he was supposed to do, got everything he wanted, including the best friend who became his girlfriend who Damon might have accidentally developed feelings for.

Not that he'd tell anyone.

Actually, all the young couples at this party seemed to be unintentionally stabbing him in the gut, even Lana and that one stable boy--what was his name? Claude? Not that it mattered what his name was. The point was there was no one looking at him that way.

So he did what Damon does best--he ate and drank and he danced, and had as good a time as any lonely person could while trying to distract themselves from their loneliness.

And of course once he found Lois in the crowd, he had to have a dance with her.

He excused himself from his former dance partner and stepped her way, bowing a bit and offering his hand with a smirk.

"May I have this dance?"

Stefan found a girl in the woods and I found one on the beach. Who wants to help me get them ready for tonight?

Being a mermaid was easy.

There was the cold comfort of immortality, the games of the sea, and such a feeling of freedom. Mermaids were nothing but games and fickle hearts, their attention held for as long as something was shiny and new. She could fall in love every day with a different man, drawn to her song, and watched as they crashed against the rocks when she was done with them. They were just toys, in the end. Things that were left for immortal things like her to play with and cast aside when she was done.

It was simply the way the world was.

That didn’t mean the world wasn’t prone to change however; or that the means of that change wasn’t going to be something she did all the time. She had just swam in close to the beach, propping herself on the rocks where she could feel the sun against her body when she heard a sound that she had heard before, but never this close to land. She picked herself up a bit, before rolling over onto her side to look for the source of the sound, and what she saw astonished her. It was a woman.

Claire hadn’t seen many human women. They don’t normally come on the ships, and the ones she had seen never quite looked like her. She had long dark hair, and when she laughed, Claire felt warm, and not just because she was lying in the sun. There was something about her that Claire wanted to know more about, but she wasn’t sure how to figure it out. She was still a mermaid after all. The world of the humans wasn’t a place that she could cross into, for more reasons than one. So for right now, she just continued to watch until the boy that was with the woman happened to spot her on the rock.

“Hey!”

She startled, before turning quickly and launching herself back into the water again. As the cold rush of water hit her skin, she fought the urge to look back and see what was happening in her wake. She just snunk further down into the water, attempting to distract herself with new shells and trying to push the sound of the woman’s laughter far from her mind.

[She doesn't want to do this. She doesn't want to be here, without her family, and on her own with someone who she's fairly sure is a monster, but she also knows that it's her fault her father was put in this position in the first place. She was the one who had asked for the flower. It was on her behalf that her father angered this man, whoever he is, which means it's only fair that she serve the punishment, as requested.

She doesn't know why he wants her, but there's nothing she can do about that. She's already here.

The door's open when she arrives, and she quietly steps inside, glancing around looking for signs of servants or this man, Damon -- or anyone for that matter.]

Hello?

[there's a pause as she lets the silence sink in, and she pushes her hood off her head.]

It started, as most stories do, with someone leaving.

Most stories began with fresh starts. About a person, setting off to make a fresh start for themselves, but in the end, it always came down to someone leaving. In this particular instance, it was a lot of people starting over, or at least that was what the history passed down told them. Led by the Lanes, all six families, moved, resettled, and built lives in a small little alcove of a valley they dubbed Mystic Falls.

For a while, it was ideal. They lived in harmony, building lives for themselves and their subjects, and over the generations their little valley flourished into a happy place, lead by the princes of the province, the founding families who had brought them there all those years ago, and had kept them happy, healthy, and safe. Stefan had grown up in the company of people who would be his friends for life, until the day he died, and he wasn’t about to run the risk of losing any of that, even if he had—more than he would have liked.

It started with Buffy. Stefan wasn’t there when the actual curse was cast, but he read about it in the family’s records. On the day Buffy was born, all the kingdom came to give her gifts, and one of those gifts was a curse, to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Shelia, the most regarded witch in the village, managed to augment the curse so that Buffy would only fall asleep, but that didn’t change the fact that she was gone. By the time she turned sixteen, she disappeared, and hasn’t been seen since. Then Shelia’s granddaughter went missing as a baby, and the loss was felt by the entire village. The grief of losing a child wasn’t one that went away easily, and Stefan could still see it. He didn’t think there was anyone who couldn’t.

Then there was Damon.

No one was really sure what happened to the oldest Salvatore brother—all the rest of the town truly knew was that one day, Damon was there, and the next, he simply vanished. Stefan searched for days for some sign of his big brother in the woods outside the town, but by the end of that first week, his father came to him, telling him that Damon was dead. He wasn’t coming back. There were so many questions that had gone unanswered with regards to his older brother being gone, but there was nothing he could do about it now. There was only acceptance. But that didn’t mean he didn’t feel the loss of his brother every day.

At the end of the day, Mystic Falls was still his home. Come what may, there was going to be fairly little that could derail him from that at the end of the day. He may take some time and travel away from the town on occasion, but when it came down to it, he would always come home.

And then a girl fell from the sky.
